Apple Mail 4.0 and 4.5

** If this is the first account to be added to the Mail program you will automatically be brought through the prompts to set up an account. Skip to step 4.**

If this is an additional account, please start at Step 1 below to get to the new account set up:

  1. Open the Mail program

  2. Click Mail > Preferences....

  3. On the Accounts tab, click the + ] button to add a new account.



  4. Enter your Full Name, RISD Email Address, and Password

  5. Click Continue.



  6. Enter the information as follows:
    Account Type: Choose IMAP
    Description: Enter anything you'd like here. 
    Incoming Mail Server:  imap.gmail.com
    User Name: Enter your full RISD email address
    Password: Enter your RISD Account password

  7. Click Continue.



  8. Verify Use Secure Sockets Layer (SSL) is checked and Authentication is Password.

  9. Click Continue.



  10. Enter the information as follows:
    Description: Enter anything you'd like here. 
    Outgoing Mail Server: smtp.gmail.com
    Check the box next to Use Authentication
    User Name: Enter your full RISD email address
    Password: Enter your RISD Account password 

  11. Click Continue.



  12. Verify Use Secure Sockets Layer (SSL) is checked and Authentication is Password.

  13. Click Continue.



  14. On the Account Summary window, verify the information is correct.

  15. Click Create.



If you’d like to verify your IMAP settings after you have configured your mail client, you can view this through the Accounts tab by going through Mail > Preferences... The settings should be as follows:



To view the way your mailbox handles emails from your account or on the server (mail.risd.edu), click the Mailbox Behaviors tab.
To review your port number information, click on the Advanced tab.

  1. IMAP: IMAP (Internet message access protocol) lets you download messages from Gmail so you can access your mail with a program like Outlook Express or Apple Mail. IMAP syncs the actions you take in Outlook Express or Apple Mail with Gmail so if you read a message in your mail client, it'll be marked as read in Gmail.
